ANTONAKOS REVISITED
October 15 - November 21, 2026
Athens

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Stephen Antonakos (1926–2013), CITRONNE Gallery presents the exhibition 'ANTONAKOS REVISITED', featuring works created between 1974 and 2003.

Revisited signifies a return to the work of Stephen Antonakos from the perspective of the present. More than fifty years separate us from the earliest work in the exhibition; yet, while time does not alter the works themselves, it inevitably changes how we interpret them. The centenary of his birth offers another opportunity to reconsider works and ideas that, in today’s context, take on a different significance and acquire renewed relevance.

Antonakos arrived in New York in 1930 at the age of four. His artistic practice developed in the post-war American metropolis, during a period of profound urban, social and economic transformation. Neon was already an integral part of the city, closely associated with commercial signage, advertising and the emerging culture of consumption. Antonakos often referred to the neon signs of 42nd Street and Broadway. In his own work, however, he detached neon from its commercial function as signage. Language and commercial messaging disappear; neon becomes line, colour and material, in direct relation to space and architecture.

In 2026, at a time marked by successive crises and competing certainties, Antonakos’s rigorous abstraction — and his sustained attention to line, space and the direct experience of seeing — takes on a different intensity.

The exhibition ‘Ark of the Word: Art and Writing’, curated by art historian Bia Papadopoulou, includes a special tribute to Yannis Bouteas (1941–2026) and presents works by 32 Greek visual artists, including Christina Mitrentse.

The exhibition explores the relationship between word and image and the ways in which writing is transformed into a visual medium. As the curator notes, it functions as an ‘ark of the Word’, where the works become vehicles of communication and cultural continuity, linking the present, the past and the future.

The exhibition is on view at the Kalamata Dance Centre – Black Box Hall from October 18 to November 8, 2026.

CITRONNE Gallery, in collaboration with ANBAU Atelier, presents the exhibition ‘Embedded Stories’, featuring works by Alekos Kyrarinis, Christina Mitrentse, Myrto Xanthopoulou, Nikos Podias and Nana Sachini, as part of Limassol Art Walks 2026.

The exhibition is hosted within the residential setting of the preserved building MAKI_ka and activates the space through the introduction of inherited forms, both familiar and unexpected. The narratives that emerge redefine the residence and the present, revealing personal and collective stories, memories and expectations that are preserved, transformed and made newly legible.

Limassol Art Walks, now in its fifth edition, brings together galleries, independent venues and cultural initiatives over three days through a programme of exhibitions and artistic events, creating an open journey through contemporary visual art.

Dimitris Anastasiou, Alekos Kyrarinis and Nikos Podias participate in the group exhibition ‘The Invisible Thread Weaves’ in the village of Agapi on Tinos, curated by Eleni Glyni.

Taking Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible Cities’ as its starting point, the exhibition approaches Agapi as a place where time, experience and historical traces coexist. The works are displayed at various locations throughout the village—the old school, the watermill, dovecotes and the chapel of Agia Sophia—forming a route that connects contemporary artistic practice with the architecture and history of the place.

The exhibition runs from 9 to 25 October 2026.
