Antonopoulos
Biography
Angelos Antonopoulos was born in Tropea, Arcadia, in 1957. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASFA), pursuing painting with D. Mytaras, D. Kokkinidis, and V. Dimitreas, and scenography with V. Vassiliadis. He presented his first solo exhibition with paintings in 1986 (F Gallery, Athens), and later turned to installations featuring sculptures and constructions.
His works are characterized by black and white dominance. The restriction of color, combined with precision in design, emphasizes the conceptual dimension of his themes. A tension in anthropological research is evident, where comments on human nature coexist with autobiographical references. A characteristic aspect of his subject matter is the human body, mainly the symbolic approach to the lower limbs, expressed through interventions in their form. His sculptures are usually made of metal mesh and plaster, while he also incorporates various media (painting, photography, ready-mades, etc.) into wall or three-dimensional compositions, with an emphasis on their relation with space.
He taught at the Athens School of Fine Arts from 1989 to 2024, where he served as Director of the First Painting Workshop. He also served as Vice-Rector of the School, and in October 2017 was elected Dean of the Athens School of Fine Arts for the period December 1, 2017 – August 31, 2020. He is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EMST.
He has presented solo exhibitions in Greece and Cyprus, and has participated in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. His works are held in public and private collections.
